Jinnan Shah

Shah

In Shorkot and its surrounding villages, Jinnan Shah is a well-known Saint. Several stories speak of divine favour and miracles. A Sufi, he was both, an exorcist and a healer. Although little is known about Jinnan Shah's life in history, his reputation is still an important part of the local lore.

Lore tells us, that Jinnan Shah was brought up in a pious family known for their devoted religious practices. He displayed extraordinary abilities and a profound spiritual connection from a young age. He was known to wander into the wilderness to pray and was often found meditating for hours at end. Recognizing his divine gifts, his parents nurtured his spiritual development.

It is believed that as a child, he was visited by an angel, who gave him spiritual abilities. It is also said that he was granted the ability to identify and communicate with Jinns and spirits. His journey as a spiritual leader and protector began with this encounter.

Using a combination of prayers, Quranic verses, and spiritual practices, he has been credited with healing people who were possessed by evil spirits, on numerous accounts. People travelled great distances to seek his assistance due to his fame as an exorcist.

A young woman from a nearby village was acting strangely and suffering violent fits. She was thought to be possessed by a powerful jinn by her family. They brought her to Jinnan Shah, asking for assistance.

Invoking divine protection, Jinnan Shah began by reciting Quran verses. After that, he fought the jinn spiritually and told it to leave the woman. The woman went into convulsions and screamed when the jinn resisted. Jinnan Shah intensified his prayers, and the jinn finally gave in and left after several hours, leaving the woman alone. Overwhelmed with gratitude, her family spread the word about his abilities.

In another legend, we find out about a haunted house in the city of Shorkot. A family living in the city was experiencing terrifying phenomena, such as objects moving on their own, strange noises echoing down the halls, and a suffocating atmosphere. To get rid of the evil spirit from their home, they sought the assistance of Jinnan Shah. Upon entering the house, Jinnan Shah immediately sensed the presence of a sinister spirit. He began by reciting verses from the Quran and purifying the house with holy water. The spirit resisted, transforming into a shadow figure that wreaked havoc. After repeated attempts, the black mass was finally driven out, and harmony was reestablished in the family. The family showed their gratitude to Jinnan Shah and hailed him as their saviour.

Other than being a reputed Sufi saint and an esteemed exorcist, Jinnan Shah was also known for his divine gifts, bestowed to him by the angel he encountered as a child.

One well-known legend recounts Jinnan Shah's skill in walking on water. His favour from the divine being was shown through this miracle. His reputation as a saint with extraordinary powers was further strengthened as the story of this event spread among witnesses.

A different story tells how Jinnan Shah once used prayer to calm a violent storm. As the wind howled, and the rain beat down, he stood firm, and chanted sections from the Quran until the tempest died down. This act displayed his vigour, his compassion and his wish to safeguard the area and its people.

Moreover, lore also speaks of the residents of a remote village that was beset by disease and misfortune believed they were cursed by a malevolent spirit. When Jinnan Shah went to the village, he did a series of rituals to get rid of the evil energy. He prayed fervently and invoked divine protection. In practically no time, the illness started to subside, and the residents' fortunes boosted. They constructed a shrine in his honour and held annual celebrations to honour the saint's intervention.

Upon his death, Jinnan Shah's resting place turned into a venerated shrine and a site of pilgrimage. The shrine is visited by devotees to seek spiritual guidance, healing, and blessings. Exorcisms and other spiritual ceremonies are also performed at the shrine, carrying on Jinnan Shah's legacy of healing and protection. Sufi poetry is recited, prayers are said, and rituals are performed to remember Jinnan Shah. His spiritual contributions and the lasting impact of his legacy are brought to mind by the events.

It is thought that Jinnan Shah was a bridge between the human and the spiritual realms. In Sufi thought, his collaborations with jinns and extraordinary abilities illustrate the permeable boundary that separates these universes, highlighting the interconnectedness of all creation.

The legend of Jinnan Shah has been passed down from generation to generation orally, and stories about him are frequently told and retold at gatherings, festivals, and religious ceremonies to preserve his legacy in the collective memory of the community. Some of these stories have also been incorporated into Punjabi poetry and literature.
