Onions in Hakeemi


Onions

Onions are often referred to as the “national fruit” of the Arain community in Punjab. Jokes and banter aside, onions were often mentioned in hakeemi! Here are some tips and tricks to use onions from medieval Muslim scholarship and traditional medicinal practices in Pakistan:


A little trick to peel or cut onions: insert the knife into the onion, leave it on the blade's head, then peel and cut it to avoid the onion smell.


Onions have the power to repel dangers from water and wind.


Onion paste is beneficial when applied to dog bites.


Smelling onions prevents vomiting when taking medicine.


Excessive consumption can cause headaches, darken the eyes, increase forgetfulness, and impair intellect, especially when eaten raw.


Red onions enhance sperm, improve skin complexion, cut phlegm, cleanse the stomach, and remove skin blemishes. Eating roasted red onions clarifies the voice. Breaking red onions triggers sneezing and relieves extreme distress.


When pounded with honey, onions can cure hair loss, thick pimples and Quwaba (a type of leprosy).


Mixing onion juice with vinegar and applying it to the body cures scabies. It also helps with fainting. Onion water mixed with honey sharpens the eyesight and removes the weakness of vision.


Putting drops of onion water in the ear eliminates ringing and tinnitus. It also stops the flow of ear discharge (conge). It is also beneficial for deafness and kills worms inside the ear.
