Urdu and several other languages spoken in Pakistan today have been influenced by Persian in one way or another.
From words to epics, a lot from Persian was absorbed into Urdu via translation. Some phrases were borrowed, and are used even today. Learn five Persian phrases we still use in Urdu and what they mean!
1) Yak na shud dou shud:
An idiom which refers to one mishap happening after another.
2) Der Ayad Durust Ayad:
Another idiom, which means, better late than never. However, it’s usually used in context of realisations, about behaviour.
3) Mi Raqsam:
Literally, “I Dance” - it is often used in literature and music. There was also a Pakistani serial by this title.
4) Hanooz Dilli Dur Ast:
It translates to “Delhi is still far away.” As an idiom, it is used to refer to faraway threats. There is also a backstory to it which relates to Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, a Sufi saint of the Chishti Order.
5) Awal Khesh Baad Dervish:
An idiom which means that charity begins at home. Help yourself before you begin to help others!
