Pomegranates in Medieval Toxicology

The Kandahaari Anaar is known to be one of the best kinds of pomegranates. It originates from Afghanistan and is also widely grown in Pakistan, primarily, Balochistan.


The fruit is discussed at length in medieval medicine and toxicology by many. From Ibn Sina to Al Qazwini - what is there for us to learn?


Pomegranate stalks are excellent for driving away pesky animals like snakes and scorpions, as well as the smoke from their wood.


If someone is wounded by being struck with a pomegranate stick, the wound will not heal unless strips of horse meat are placed on it.


Pomegranates are beneficial for bleeding gums, strengthening loose teeth, and preventing the flow of blood.


Eating pomegranate seeds along with the little white bits we tend to peel off cleanses the stomach.


Pomegranates seeds are believed to brighten the heart and silences the devil of misgivings for 40 days.


Some pomegranates are sweet and some are sour but all types were said to cure shock.


Eating the stalk of a pomegranate for three days shall keep eye pain away a year.


In some parts of Pakistan, it is also believed that one of the grains in each pomegranate is from heaven!
