The Man who went Missing

A scene from a Pakistani village
Painting by Safeer Khan

Once upon a time, there lived a man who lived alone in a village. He was always very lonely. One day, he suddenly disappeared.

The entire village was surprised and searched for him, but no one knew where he had gone. A year passed, then two, and even three, but there was no sign of him.

After many years, he unexpectedly returned to the village. The villagers asked him, "Where did you go?"

He replied, "I went over the mountains of Hunza and entered the land of the fairies. There, I fell in love, married a fairy, and had children. I lived there for many years, but now, I wished to return to my village."

The villagers laughed and did not believe him. Some time later, the old man passed away. At his funeral, many strange men appeared. They didn’t just look different; they didn’t even seem human. The villagers were curious and asked them who they were. One of the strangers replied, "I am his son."

The villagers were astonished. "But he did not have a wife? Or children? How is this possible?"

It was then that the villagers realized the old man wasn't crazy after all. The man who went missing had truly married a fairy.
