The Seven Queens of Sindh

“Shah Jo Risalo” is a collection of poetry by Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, a famed poet from Sindh. In his poetic compendium, he talks about the Seven Queen Of Sindh, also known as “Sattain Jo Saqao” and recounts the tales of these seven heroines.


This assemblage of poetry highlights each of the Queen's virtues such as patriotism, perseverance and wisdom and valour. Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai celebrates these legendary Heroines whilst reflecting on the cultural and spiritual heritage of Sindh. So, what can we learn from each of Shah's soormayi's?


Marui was a young village girl, she was abducted by Umar Somroo because she refused to marry him and was held hostage in the Amarkot Fort for several years. She remained steadfast. Impressed by her unwavering resolve, he eventually released her. Marui’s story is one of great devotion, patriotism and loyalty to her homeland and her people.


Momal was a princess of Kak Mahal, she was full of wisdom and a great beauty. She and Rano, a prince, were in love.But, Rano once accused Momal of infidelity and left her, heartbroken and desperate, she jumped into a raging fire, Hearing of this incident, Rano jumped into the flames as well . Their story symbolises the eternal flame of love and fidelity.


Punhun was a prince and Sassui was a commoner, despite their societal differences, they married. Punhan’s brothers were unhappy with this union, they took him away. Sassui embarked on a dangerous journey through mountains and deserts to get to Punhun. Her unwavering love and determination to get to her beloved became a legend.


King Jam Tamachi fell in love with a fisherwomen named Noori. Because of her humble origin and devotion to her homeland she was raised above all the other ladies with royal blood. Her story enlightens us about humility, fulfilled love and inner beauty. 


Rai Diyach’s devotion to his wife, Sorath, was tested. When a minstrel asked him to give him his head, Diyach, the generous king sacrificed his head. Sorath, unable to bear his loss, followed him to death. Their story symbolises tragic love, devotion and sacrifice.


Lilan faced a test of loyalty when she made the grave mistake of being swayed by material wealth, Lila repented and sought out her husband’s forgiveness. Her story is a reminder of true love and transient nature of material wealth


Sohni's tragic love story is a symbol of passion, and the fatal consequence of social norms. Her commitment to meet with Meher every night eventually results in her drowning in the waters that she used to travel through every night to meet with Meher.
